(RENFREW, ON) - The Renfrew Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated 253 calls for service during the past week.

Domestic Violence

Arnprior and Renfrew officers investigated nine domestic disputes during the past week. One male was charged with assault with a weapon, assault, mischief, resisting arrest and two counts of uttering threats. No other criminal offences took place.

Break and Enter

A garage on Calabogie Road in the Township of Greater Madawaska was broken into twice recently and was reported in late December. In September someone entered the locked garage and stole an air impact wrench. The tool was a Matco brand, red and black in colour. A deadbolt lock was damaged to enter the garage. The victim then noticed December 20 or 21someone again broke the lock and stole an ice auger. The auger was a yellow and black Jiffy brand gas powered machine. There are currently no suspects.

Sometime between 10 am Thursday December 28 and 10:30 am Friday December 29 a business known as Carswell Alley and Gallery on Carswell Street in Arnprior was broken into. A screen was cut and a window opened to gain access. Once inside the thief stole a quantity of cash and merchandise. Provincial Constable Mark O'Dacre is leading the investigation.

Thefts

A floodlight that illuminates the Calvary Pentecostal Church sign was stolen, for the second time in recent months. The caller reported noticing the floodlight missing on December 26. The church is located on Wrangler Road in Renfrew and there are no suspects at this time.

Police are investigating with Renfrew Hydro the theft of hydro at an address in Renfrew. A residence was disconnected in August, and Hydro officials learned recently the residents have been stealing hydro since shortly after the disconnection. PC Amanda Carruthers is investigating.

Police are investigating the theft of a generator from a property on Mary Street in Arnprior. The victim reported their generator was stolen off a back deck between December 24 at 5 pm and December 25 at 8 am. There are no suspects.

On December 27 the victim reported a cleaning person stole a bank card from their home in Renfrew prior to December 23. The victim then noticed 2 unauthorized banking withdrawals. The bank and police are continuing to investigate. There is a suspect.

On Thursday December 28 just before 1 am a male pumped approx. $30 worth of fuel into a red portable gas container and then ran off. The theft happened at the Shell gas station on Daniel Street S in Arnprior. PC Tamara Dube is continuing to investigate.

PC Jeff Cassidy is investigating a theft of gas from MacEwen gas station on Raglan Street in Renfrew. Video surveillance indicates the driver of the black Hyundai SUV made no attempt to pay and attempted to obscure their licence plates. The investigation is ongoing.

RIDE Spot Checks

Arnprior and Renfrew OPP officers completed a total of 41 RIDE spot checks during the past seven days. No impaired drivers were located.

Mischief

Sometime between Thursday December 21 to Sunday December 24 someone spray painted a sign located on a property in Arnprior. The sign was defaced with grey coloured spray paint, and the damage was discovered on December 26 at the property on Gillies Grove Road. PC Kevin Rebertz is investigating.

Fraud

A victim contacted police to report they were locked out of their Facebook account. The victim recalled entering a contest on Facebook and providing personal information. They then noticed they were unable to access several accounts on social media. The victim was provided security advice and advised to contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre for more assistance.

Users of social media must be very vigilant about information they are providing to people online. Answering what seems like innocent questions like what is your favorite food is actually providing someone with information they may use against you at some point. For plenty of useful tips to protect yourself from fraud, go to the Canadian Anti-Fraud website at www.antifraudcentre.ca or call them at 1-888-495-8501.

Western Union Money Scams

If scammers had you pay via Western Union, you can now file a claim to get money back. The Federal Trade Commission is alerting consumers who lost money to scammers who told them to pay via Western Union's money transfer system between January 1, 2004 and January 19, 2017, that they can now file a claim to get their money back by going to Federal Trade Commission Western Union Refunds. Canadian consumers are eligible to make claims. All claims must be filed by February 12, 2018.
